There is a real community building that occurs as a result of the interaction between high school students, parents, teachers, and local EMS and hospital personnel. From watching the car wreck, and seeing my friends, to being at the funeral. Hearing real life stories by guest speakers. This is by far one of the best programs created. Every school should have this program in place, as it really does affect us. I know that I will never put myself, or my friends in a bad situation due to alcohol. My high school just finished today with this program for the second year in a row. I unfortunately was not a part of it even though I wanted to be. But even though I wasn't, the effect it had on me was just the same-heart wrenching, frightening, emotional, etc. The first day was very unnerving, somewhat uncomfortable at times, but I saw our wreck scene and it blew me away! This program does everything it can to simulate it and it worked. The cars, the blood, the works. The next day at the service was what really got to me. The video that was made, made me me cry quite hard. But what really got me balling my eyes out was the letters from the "dead" students and their parents. They cryed as if it were real! It almost was, even to me. The "drunk driver's" speech got me to cry also, not only because I know him personally, but he was genuinlly emotional and really crying himself. I was balling almost the entire time. I will admit that last year as a junior, a senior was pulled from my class(it was a mixed class) and people started to cry. I thought it was ridiculous because they saw him leave. He wasn't really dead so what is the problem? After I saw it all this year, I take that all back. It got very emotional. I believe this is the closest you can get to a real drunk driving death without out having real fatalities. Just what they have the students involved and their parents go through is exactly what would happen if it were real. The hospital, police station, everything. It seemed like a living hell for them. We also put flowers up for the service as well as tombstones in a small patch of grass we have along with the regulur program. The one thing we do differently is when we pull students from the classes, they don't come back. They do get their face painted but then they follow the grim reaper (out drama teacher) around behind him, for the rest of the day holding their tombstones for a little while until they put it out in the ground themselves. They coem to school teh next day either except for their own service. You don't see or talk to them until the next day when it's all over. The "dead" students are separate from family, friends, as well as school activities as if they were dead. It is much too real. Too many students just laugh it off or know that their friend isn't really dead so they don't care. Even one of my own teachers asked me "Well, isn't this somewhat hard to believe?" It's ignorance like that which causes this problem. I know that I personally will never drink and then drive, but that does not mean I can't be hurt or even killed by someone who does. They are out there. Death doesn't just effect the drunk driver's family but also the families of the innocent, emphasis on innocent, victims. They were killed for no reason, but were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Every 15 Minutes program is literally God's gift to drunk driving awareness! It 500% more effective than any speech from a drink driver saying to "learn from my mistakes" or even a victim who says "I am an example of what can happen to you". I do not by any means consider my self much of an emotional person, and I'm certainly not a cryer, but this got my waterworks practically flooding aorund me for the next few hours. If you are like me or think you are too tough or macho to cry, think again. Trust me, you will cry. If you don't, well then, either you have a heart if ice and stone(or none at all) or you are just plain ignorant. One person every fifteen minutes, twenty-four hours a day. That is right around 100 people a day! You do the math and see how fast this number adds and increases. Also realize how quickly you could become one of those statistics. Don't let it happen! My local highschool (San Benito High/Hollister High in Hollister,CA) just did the "Every 15 Mins" program yesterday and although i was not a participant this year, i got the oppertunity to experience it my junior year, in 2005. My little brother came home talking about it, he's a freshman and only juniors and seniors got to view it but he heard from his friends how it happened, how they felt and the impact it had on everyone who was there. He was just shocked at what they told him. My family lost my younger brother the end of 2004, who was also involved in a car accident, and of course drinking was the main factor. When i witnessed this, i was devastated. I was shocked and mentally not prepared. No one warned me, everything was still so fresh in my head. I remeber sobing for days after i viewed this, i sat in the counselors office, just crying, all my frinds just in shock. Becasue not only did the every 15 mins event shock them, but becasue they recalled my brothers accident and all the others that happened in our community. It was so hard and not only have i lost my brother, but so many friends and people that i knew in our community due to drinking and driving. This really made alot of my friends consider not drinking and driving, this impacted the school, the staff and the community a whole lot. im glad this program is spreading the word, becasue this is serious stuff. My Daughter will be participating in Every 15 Minutes in May 2007. She will become a victim of a drunk driver and will die. She asked me to participate with her and to write a letter to her as if she had died, this was extremly hard to do. I didn't know if I could be strong enough to do this. Every time I would think about it, I would start to cry, this program has become very emotional for me. I would never want to ever lose my Daughter to a drunk driver, the thought of my Daughter Angela killed would destroy me and my family's life. I know that my daughter is a kind loving person and if it means that maybe she could spare one person or touch others from drinking & driving then this is worth it. I'm very proud of her for participating in this program, It will take place right before Prom. I believe that our children participating in Every 15 Minutes will touch the student so they share with their family and friends the importance of this program and hope that nobody will have to feel the pain of losing a loved one or take the life of someone who is Loved by drinking and driving. My school is currently participating in the "Every 15 Minutes" program. We had no notice at all, which resulted in a terrible day for me personally. I have had to suffer through losing someone to a drunk driving accident. It is the worst feeling in the world, and I was forced to relive it every 15 minutes. All day. I only wish I was warned ahead of time so I could have been mentally prepared. And I wish my classmates would take this seriously. I am a sophomore at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead, California, and i attended last years assembely for Every 15 Minutes. After watching the tape from the year before I was in tears. The reality of drinking and driving and its fatality rate is so huge and im just so glad to see what schools are doing to teach kids about it. I think that what so many schools do with Every 15 Minutes is absolutly incredible. My school just did this program two weeks ago, and it had such an impact on the students. The assembly the next day moved everyone to tears. I was on the film crew that prepared the video to be shown at the assembly the next day, so I participated behind the scenes. In a way, it was a much more intense experience, because I rode in the ambulance with one of the victims, and then when he died in the hospital, to watch the grief in his parent's faces was overwhelming. I never drank and drove before this program, and I don't plan on it now. But now when I hear friends talking about their weekend experiences with drunk driving, I am very adamant about convincing them not to do so again. To go through this two-day experience helps to instill just how much drinking and driving not only affects you, but everyone around you as well. I dropped off my sophomore son in school 3/8 and saw all the cop cars lined up at the entrance of the school. That afternoon, I came to pick up my son to bring him and a frind to a memorial for a former Sheldon high schoolmate who passed away the Sunday before dur to a motorcyle accident. I asked the office staff why all the police cars in the school and she explained to me the Every 15 minute program. I came the next day to witness the "memorial at the school gym". I was very impressed by the whole program and saw the impact it had on both the juniors and seniors in the gym and the family who were there to witness. I know that the we as parents could only hope that what the kids witnessed, they would put into action....to make the right choice when they are put in "the situation". Today I am wearing a "Every 15 Minutes" shirt that was my younger brothers. Knowing it had some involvment with his high school (Pahrump Valley) years of informing students about 'Destructive Decisions' I felt good displaying the message the shirt sends out. While visiting my wife at the hospital a woman asked me, "What happens every 15 minutes?" I explained, and it seemed as though I had planted this seed of awareness just by deciding to wear this shirt. I plan on wearing it more often, in fact, I might not give it back to my brother now...Just think of the impact if these were distributed to high school and college students. Two years ago I was a junior at Southwest High school. Every 15 Minutes came in the spring because out of a class survey, ours was the one that appeared to have the biggest problem with drinking. We used my friend Luke's car in the crash scene because he had totaled it the year before driving drunk. We made fun of him saying that he'd be the first one to die in our class. Sarcasm. That's all it was. But a year later on January 20th, 2006, he was driving drunk and drove into the back of a city bus. Basically, people can try to send a message all they want, but after seeing it fail, I've lost faith in our generation to make good decisions and protect ourselves. We miss you, Luke. In writing my medical school application essays I was reflecting on the most important community service experiences that I have ever had. Being involved in this program definitely tops the list. Hey all, I was involved in the Every 15 Minutes program at my high school in March (Etiwanda High School). I just wanted to say thanks for everything you do. From the volunteers who make this program their lives and to the law inforcement personel who worked a double shift so we could hear what they had to say. From the parents who participated to the firefighters who freed me from the car using the jars of life in the program, I offer my sincere thanks. I am now at Cal State San Bernardino and making a difference when I can because every minute I'm here since that day I am forced to realize that things could have been different. If this was not just a program but real life, well, you know where I'm going. I'd be dead, for one. I am writing a research paper, of my choice, and I chose the effects of alcoholism because of the touching experience I had. In fact I was reserching and found this site. It opened many emotions. Last week, I did a speech in Oral Communications on Drinking and Driving. Its hard to get across to college students about the effects of drinking and driving, but if it stops one person . . . You know, it seems the only people who are signing are ones involved with the program. But that's ok. We show the message by how we live our lives. We show it by the way we act and refrain from enterring a car with someone who has had a few too many. We show it by stopping that person from having a few too many before he or she begins. Its just a shame that people will only learn from deaths and not from lives. Alcohol and gasoline makes a very flamable situation. This is probably the longest message, but I think it works for the people who read this. EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES changed my life and many of my friends' lives. hello, I am 18 yeas old and just graduated from Windsor high School to go to college. I was so impacted when you guys did the similation at my school a year ago. I think that it really served it's purpose of teaching us to be more carefull when driving out there and to not do stupid thing that will get us into trouble. I personally felt really moved by the simulation and made me take the determination to never ride with a drunk driver, and to not ever diver under the influence, although i don't drink. My name is Matthew Reece, we had the Every 15 Minutes program at my school during my junior year, and i must say that it has made a huge impact in my life...not only the mock car crash, but the parents testimony of when her daugter was actually killed a couple years back by a drunk driver...it is a growing epidemic that is happening all over the united states, and it seems that the Every 15 Minutes Program is a type of vaccine...the program is definetly helping save lives... Yeah I am now a seior in high school and I went to the Leadership Institute at Luna Community College in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
